Join the State of Minnesota Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday with the 33rd Annual Celebration of the MLK Holiday! On Monday, January 21, 2019, we will celebrate “Women of Color in STEM.”  the keynote speakers for this event are Dr. Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to travel in space, and 3M CEO Mike Roman. We will have a live DJ, a youth rally, and speakers to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The event will honor and aware Dr. Reatha Clark King and Mrs. Katherine Coleman Johnson. Dr. Reatha Clark King is an event, businesswoman, philanthropist, and educator, and will receive the Civil Rights Legend Award. Mrs. Katherine Coleman Johnson is an educator, mathematician, and NASA pioneer and trailblazer, and will receive the Governor’s Equity and Justice Legacy Award.
The celebration is hosted by Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and sponsored by 3M. The emcees for the event are Adrienne Broaddus and James Burroughs.
This celebration is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and will fill up fast, so please arrive early. ASL interpreters and CART Services will be available on site. This is event is part of the Orchestra's Common Chords project.
In this first-of-its-kind Common Chords event, Music Director Osmo Vänskä, Minnesota Orchestra and Sanctuary Covenant Church invite members of the North Minneapolis community to join in a family-friendly sing-along with the Orchestra, preceded by a community meal catered by Breaking Bread Café, a North Minneapolis based social enterprise run by Appetite for Change. Attendees will share a meal with community members and musicians, have the opportunity to try bucket drumming, and then join a sing-along featuring well-known songs and spirituals. Register now for the community meal.
Meal, catered by Breaking Bread Café; 7-8 p.m. Sing-Along; Minnesota Orchestra - Osmo Vänskä, conductor, Minnesota Orchestra.

Music Director Osmo Vänskä leads the Minnesota Orchestra in a performance at North High School—the culminating event of the Orchestra’s Common Chords residency week in the North Minneapolis community. Program highlights include Dance for Martin’s Dream by American composer Michael Abels and Danzón by Cuban composer Alejandro García Caturla, plus Leonard Bernstein’s showstopping Overture to Candide, Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia and Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1. The concert features musical collaborations with The Steeles, MacPhail Northside Youth Orchestra, Orchestra trumpeter Charles Lazarus and Patricio DeLara from Juxtaposition Arts, who will create new artwork live during the performance.
